As I share the poems I know by heart each Friday, I smile to know we are touching our shared heart. This poem I first heard recited by Robert Bly, who gave such a flourish with his hand at the end that I felt him embody the spirit of Mirabai. Mirabai, born about 1498 in India, was a Hindu mystic & poet, a devotee of Krishna who left her life as a princess (& her arranged marriage) to wander the country side without possessions, praising the divine. In this poem/song she responds to family members who insist she return to her old life, to her duties as a wife & daughter. Why Mira Cant Come Back to Her Old House The colors of the Dark One have penetrated Miras body; all the other colors washed out. Making love with the Dark One and eating little, those are my pearls and my carnelians. Meditation beads and the forehead streak, these are my scarves and my rings. Thats enough feminine wiles for me. My teacher taught me this. Approve me or disapprove me: I praise the Mountain Energy night and day. I take the path that ecstatic human beings have taken for centuries. I dont steal money, I dont hit anyone. What will you charge me with? I have felt the swaying of the elephants shoulders; and now you want me to climb on a jackass? Try to be serious. ~by Mirabai (translated by Robert Bly)
