As I shared with you a week or so ago, our volunteers have been faithfully going to the downtown area of Nashville for over six months to feed a group of feral, homeless dogs. This all began last July when I was contacted by the cast of Nashville, the t.v. show, that was filming on location and discovered a litter of pups. It took many weeks, but we were able to get the pups, two of whom were adopted locally, the rest of whom now live in New England. Sadly, we were never able to catch the mother or her older pups all of whom have grown up on their own. Through thick and thin Ric, Dana, Carol, Cheri, and Hing have gone 3 and 4 times a week to put out food and water and to try to win their trust. This morning they were in for a shock. When Ric and Dana were putting out fresh water, they heard the voices of tiny pups. I was contacted and Savannah(my daughter) and I managed to get a live trap there. We carefully placed the tiny newborns in the back of the trap and we all prayed(I mean that sincerely) as we waited in the shadows to see if mama would go in to try to get her babies. Our prayers were answered and quickly. With in three minutes mama was in that live trap and the spring door snapped shut. We hugged, we cried, and were amazed. I guess there is no danger a mother of any species will not risk for her children(I so relate to that feeling.) Carefully, we carried the precious cargo through the abandoned parking lot, up the hill, and to the s.u.v. Momma was frozen in fear, but she was headed to a new life. I want to thank Greymont Kennels for setting up a suite complete with a whelping box, a dim light, perfect temperature, and a caring staff. We hope Momma can be tamed, but if not, she will at least be fixed and released and the babies(only one day old) have been spared freezing and or growing up to be yet another feral dog. Folks all of this started with one dog failing to be fixed. We will update you and get more pics very soon.
