As I was getting Jackie to bed tonight, I was thinking of what tomorrow is. September 29, 5 years ago, was the day Jackie underwent surgery to remove her cancerous right kidney. The surgeon said 3 1/2-4 hours.....they had 2 pints of blood on hand for transfusion. He came out at 2 hours and 45 minutes(our hearts sank) to tell us it was successful and that she didnt need a transfusion because she lost less than an ounce of blood (a major blood filtering organ had just been removed) They had said wed be in the hospital for 4-7 days......she was released in 2.....on day 4 she was climbing on the couch and got in trouble with me. There were/has been so many amazing things about this whole journey. The kids and families that weve formed life-long friendships with....we would not trade for anything. As I held her tonight and thought about it.....I once again had tears because this was very scary. I know we are fortunate....I just dont know why. Are we more deserving? Absolutely not! I am incredibly grateful that shes still with us, but Im also heartbroken for the parents who are unable to hold their child tonight while getting them to bed......because.....well......you know.
