As I watch the election results in maharashtra, here are some comments. 1. I see a clear verdict from the electorate dissmissing the Congress/NCP government. 2. I Also see a clear variance from the opinion polls- compared to the the predictions of the opinion polls, the BJP is leading in fewer seats, the Congress and NCP are leading in more seats and Raj Thakrays MNS has suffered a bigger defeat than the number of seats predicted in the opinion polls. What does all this mean? 1. People want to punish Congress/NCP government for their rampant corruption. 2. There is a clear message to BJP- parting ways with Shiv Sena did not go down very well with the electorate in terms of rewarding the gamble played by Mr. Amit shah in his decision to go alone. 3. A more democratic response to the election outcome would be- for Shiv Sena and the BJP to end their hatchet, contain their egos, and form a government. Having a BJP/Shiv Sena government will allow ideologically symbiotic coalition to take charge. It will also allow the opposition to target the government on issues and ideologies. On the other hand if clash of egos and other vested interests lead to any alignment other than BJP+ Shiv Sena combination, it will be both intellectually and morally a corrupt arrangement. I am curious to know how many defectors from congress or NCP who contested on BJP ticket got elected.
