As Old Man Winter arrives and the holidays are just around the corner, it’s important that we stay focused on the safety of our members, their families and homes. Did you know that a house fire can burn out of control in less than three minutes? That homes with open floor plans usually result in significant damage because the fire isnt quickly contained? Did you know that due to advances in construction and new materials used in furniture and furnishings today have created what UL fire researchers call “a perfect storm”? Here are some actions to pass on to our members about what they can do to protect their families and homes from fire this holiday season: • Plan your fire escape. Use the holidays as a good time to practice a fire escape plan with your loved ones. Identify at least two exits from every room in the house. • Install carbon monoxide alarms on each floor of your home. • Water, water, water your tree. Make a fresh cut on the base before putting your tree into a sturdy stand, and water frequently. • Check your lights, check them twice. Inspect lights for cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires and loose connections which may pose a fire or shock hazard. • Look for UL. The UL mark on a product means that samples of that product have been tested to the highest safety standards. • Decorate with a safe eye. Cords should not be run under carpets or tacked-up with metal nails or staples. • Check extension cords. Do not connect more than three miniature light strings together. • Placement of Tree. Your tree should be positioned at least three feet away from fireplaces, radiators and other heat sources, never blocking doorways or exits.
