As Pakistan and India celebrate this tremendous dual Nobel win, Ive seen half a dozen articles published with headlines like Why So Many Pakistanis Hate Their Nobel Peace Prize Winner or Malala Yousafzai: An idol to the world, but outcast at home. These headlines feed into existing stereotypes that Pakistanis are hostile towards girls education. That is far from true. The Taliban and extremists are hostile towards girls education, most Pakistanis are not. According to this PEW study done a few weeks ago, there is strong support for girls’ education in Pakistan. Pakistanis broadly support the education of girls. More than eight-in-ten (86%) say that education is equally important for boys and girls. Very few think that education is either more important for boys than girls (7%) or more important for girls than boys (5%). And more people express favorable (30%) than unfavorable (20%) opinions of Malala Yousafzai, the 17-year-old from Pakistan who survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban for her outspoken activism for girls’ education. About half (51%) do not offer an opinion about her. The mistrust associated with Malala, has a lot more to do with a very rigorous online and offline campaign meant to malign her and skew perceptions about her. Most of her critics are not anti-girls education, they are just anti-Malala, because theyve been won over by the misinformation campaign. pewglobal.org/2014/08/27/a-less-gloomy-mood-in-pakistan/ h/t Ahmer Naqvi
