As Salam Walaikum dear brothers and sisters, below is todays Khutba that was at Masjid Al-Othman. The Khutba was about a broadcast given by a Sheikh in 1959 and he said: “For those of you who are listening to me, I know most of you are sitting in your homes, drinking coffee or chatting with you family, or thinking of businesses and jobs, but has it ever occurred to you that one day you are going to die and there is a hereafter?” He said that these thoughts may come to us, but they soon disappear too as if you never thought them. You are like a group of travelers, who have forgotten why they are travelling and as a matter of fact they have gotten lost, and gotten used to travelling during the day and sleeping at night, and among those crowds there is a man a guide who is trying to tell them which direction to travel, but the fact is that these travelers don’t want to pay attention to him, as they are busy talking to each other and enjoying the trip, they cannot hear and understand what he is talking about. They have gotten used to the seeing the sights and deceits and that’s why they arent bothered to even see which direction they are travelling in and why they are travelling. He said that he is like the guide and we are like those people, we are all living in the state in this life, away from thinking about the reality of the hereafter. One Ramadan passes and we renew our relationship with Allah and like this many Ramadans pass and we experience the same. We passed Ramadans in winters, in springs, in summers, and in the fall, and we see the life change among us every day; children are born, people die, we see Ramadans come and go, and the whole thing seems almost like one day. Same with the summer vacations, we notice that the Fridays get closer and closer as if there are no days in between and all of a sudden, the summer is over. What is happening? We are losing our age, we are losing our life time and we are at a loss. This is why Allah said in the Quran, “Allah swears by Time, that human beings are at a loss”, we are all at a loss. If someone is destined for 700 years every day they live is a day minus, every moment is a minus, every hour is a minus, and they will leave everything behind them. Neither their money, nor their house, fortune, or wealth will accompany them. Everything will be left for those who will inherit them and they will go to their grave alone in just a shroud. This is the reality of life, except the things we take in our graves, that is our faith and our good deeds. He continued his speech, and said I can summarize who we are as if we are tribes on an island somewhere in the ocean and one of the superpower countries come to this tribe and tell them that their island will be selected for nuclear tests, therefore they are giving them the offer that they will be granted citizenship in a certain country where they will be given a house and job and all of what they will lose will be replaced to them. So the airplanes are going to arrive, everyone who wishes to evacuate, should pack up and be ready and leave with the planes because we will do the test. This message reaches everyone on the island. In the island, one group says, what we hear is not going to be true, we don’t believe that there is any other country other than our island and what we believe is what we see and there is no other country expect our island. So the wise men came to them and warn them saying that they will die if they don’t leave, but they paid them no heed. Another group acknowledged what will take place, but they go back home and start buying new things, new furniture and start decorating their island homes. So the wise men asked them what are you doing you know this place will be destroyed soon and yet your behaviour is opposite to what you have acknowledged, instead you should leave, why are you doing this? Therefore you say that you agree but your actions say that you don’t and you are liars. The third group knew that they had to evacuate, so they packed themselves and got ready for the day they would be evacuated. At the end of the speech the sheikh said, this example is the example of the life we are living, the people with common sense know that this life is temporary and a bridge to the hereafter and they know that this life could be over any second, so they prepare themselves to be ready for the moment Allah has decided. So they were among those whom Allah has set to be prevented from loss. When we hear such reminders, we should evaluate ourselves, are we among the first group, or the second or the third? We are nowadays among the second group, we acknowledge with our tongue but our behavior is totally different. When you read about the life of the Prophet (SAW) and his companions, their concept was clear cut; they knew their mission and their direction. As in the beginning of the khutba when the Sheikh said that if people are confused about their direction, they will never reach their destination. I ask Allah to give us moments of evaluation and reflection and the sense that time is going by us.
