As South Africa heads towards the 2016 Local Government Elections, the country has experienced a tide of protests echoing dissatisfaction with lack the of service delivery. People are increasingly attributing their anger towards service delivery to the visible rise in corruption, people’s voices not being heard and poor relationship between councillors and other ward committee members. Will the new councillors change these trends? Are the manifestos even responding to these concerns raised by communities? What these survey results carry is a clear message from the electorate that they need a transparent accountable local government that is able to respond to the needs of communities with spaces of real engagement. The question is; “do political parties in contestation have the quality of candidates that is required to improve the quality of local communities?”
