As a 12 year old boy, a quite, shy, timid boy, I was an invisible creature to the world - then I discovered two vital things, poetry and punk rock - the intellect and the beast, what a combo! I was blown away by Emily Dickinsons language and abstraction - at the time I had no idea what she was talking about but I knew it was what I needed. Then I read Whitman and was relieved that I got most of it and that his sensitivity and romance were just like mine. Then I found out he self published Leaves of Grass - D.I.Y. - just like a punk kid. Then with Punk Rock - the rage I felt was the same as theirs - Bad Brains, Black Flag, The Clash, Dead Kennedys, Buzzcocks, M.D.C. - they all gave me courage, just as Emily and Walt did. These artists freed me from mainstream culture forever and I owe a big kiss to them all - from Joe Strummer to Denise Levertov to Rimbaud to Jello Biafra.
