As a 12 year old girl in Kenya, Kakenya Ntaiya made a deal with her father that she would submit to the horrific Masai FGM ordeal if she could stay in school. It was a hell of a journey, but she subsequently got a PhD in Education from the University of Pittsburgh, and returned to her village to build a boarding school for girls - with one condition of admittance: NO student can be subjected to FGM. Kakenyas Dream - the Academy for Girls is changing lives every day, but her important work faces grave institutional and cultural challenges. Please vote (every day) for Kakenya Ntaiya as CNNs HERO of the YEAR. The associated funding -- and worldwide endorsement -- of her efforts will enable thousands of girls to develop into the leaders and role-models our world needs.
