As a Business Technologist, I am keenly interested in risks, privacy and trust issues, as technology pervades every area of our life. As human beings, we have evolved over thousands of years to become experts at making risk decisions at split second - consciously and subconsciously. Technology is now one of the variables we have to factor into these plethora of decisions. Multiple systems helps us organise our daily lives, helps corporations drive their businesses and helps governments keep the state machinery running. Risk is a fact of life, the adverse effect of decisions we make and actions we take. Today, technology is embedded virtually in every facet of our life and the “Internet of Things” is the new mantra. Microprocessors with logic are being programmed into most devices to make our lives easier or shall I say more automated. We also know that systems do fail, hence it is pertinent that we understand the risks around this very well. Every day we make hundreds of risk decisions but we still remain very poor at making risk decisions in our use of technology. Perhaps, we just dont understand the risks very well. What if it goes wrong or it doesnt work out the way we expected? Pause and reflect about the tools you use every day, and assess how you will cope or what will be happen if they dont work as expected, particularly the critical ones - your burglar alarm, your car brakes, your apartment lift, etc. Have a safe weekend.
