As a fairly new resident to Auburn, I find it to be an indescribably gorgeous foothill community. One of the most charming aspects is its comparative lack of major shopping centers, boasting big-box stores and increased traffic. Yes, we have a Target and a Kmart, but those are nothing compared to the over-development that occurs in other towns all over Placer County and elsewhere. However, as a supporter of the arts, I was saddened to learn there was a Costco slated to be built, and that its construction would require removal of a historic theater. I soon became the newest member of the Save Dewitt Theater steering committee. We at the Dewitt Theater are officially in favor of arriving at a mutually beneficial arrangement with Costco management. We are in discussion to persuade the retailer to alter their blueprints so that our theater, which currently serves as home to the Music and More, can be spared. Music and More must be able continue to serve the hundreds of school-age children that benefit from the arts. We firmly believe that such a balance can be achieved, if we all work together. It should be noted that there is a faction in Auburn that is staunchly anti-Costco. We are not affiliated with this group, and do not endorse the strategies that they employ. Although some of our photos and other materials have been used (without our permission), we are advocating for Costco’s arrival, so long as they adhere to their historically responsible practices. In that event, we welcome them. Anyone interested in getting involved, can contact us at our Facebook page, Save Dewitt Theater. Many thanks for your kind consideration of our concerns and our position. Sandra Fogler, Auburn auburnjournal/article/7/31/14/reader-input-construct-local-costco-care
