As a high school teacher myself, watching good teachers bail out - TopicsExpress

As a high school teacher myself, watching good teachers bail out of NC is a travesty no doubt, but one that should have never come to this point... Ive been holding my Facebook tongue but heres my question: WHERE was this outrage during the Hunt, Easley, and Perdue administrations - when it could more easily be addressed - save 2008 when Easley froze the salaries during the mortgage crisis? Do a little research and you will find on the NEA site that teacher salaries in NC ranked 51st - yes, DEAD LAST during those three administrations - in pay increases between 2001 and 2012 at a whopping 7.7%. over 11 years. Yes, something needs to be done - especially to the RIDICULOUS starting pay grid for the first four years of new hires (I wonder how many people I would have kept as a manager in the corporate world with no pay increases for 4 years), but we didnt exactly get to this place overnight - it is going to take some time to repair this ridiculous decade-old over site.
