As a person who has worked with the Jewish people in NYC for about 18 years I always felt closeness to them. As they experience in their life that which most African Americans have experiences the word “prejudice”. I remember back in 1965 after I was married we had numerous Jewish landlords, especially our insurance agent Mr. Weiss who we just loved, and our neighborhood retailers from the Bronx to as far as Delancey Street, to midtown Manhattan furniture store, and Harlem as I worked for Minks Haberdashery on 125th Street which was Jewish owned. It was the kosher delicatessen where I ate lunch and as a young kid, if our mother needed credit it was given gladly without any extra cost. And in my years of working and living in NYC I had many friends of the Jewish faith. I always saw them as a mirroring of the African American, having experience the same atrocities that we had to endure and the struggles. I hate to say that that feeling has faded since my relocation to Virginia I would assume Jewish folks are here but that former feeling of familiarity is no more.
