As a producer, one of the best pieces of advice Ive ever heard - TopicsExpress

As a producer, one of the best pieces of advice Ive ever heard comes from Tom Morello on The Nerdist. Ive transcribed it below. This guitar. It was horrible. I tried to make it sound great and I was unable to. And I switched the neck ten times and the pickups ten times and the strings and put little pieces of dead weight on it to give it more tone; this and that, and it never sounded good to me. I had this amp too that I was just like frustrated with. So one day I went in there and I just spent hours fiddling and finally gave up. I got it as good as I could sound. I was not satisfied with it. It was not the tone I wanted. I marked the amplifier; like this is the best that I can do and its not what I want. This is the guitar. And I decided, Im never going to think about it again. Im going to use this sound and this guitar, to now make music. And whatever this sound is, is the sound that became the sound of Rage Against The Machine Records and Audioslave Records and Nightwatchmen Records, and Jamming with Bruce Springsteen Records and I just like put it out of my head. Im not going to chase gear, Im not going to chase that stuff, thats going to be locked in stone, and now its just going to be about creating with whatever Ive got!
