As a words-not-numbers guy, I shouldnt love the work that the BAs economist Bart Watson does (but I do). Yes, as one of the post-GABF armchair analysts, Im a voice in the medal-count choir. But I ultimately keep chiming in with something like may the best beer win. (Or rather, gold medalists are amazing beers and whatever came in 4th was probably amazing, too.) Barts primary message, that, after drinking homegrown beers in 47 states I can attest to, is, Parity in craft beer is high across the country. Geekily, he backs that fact up with math. He devised the attached chart to show top states expected medals and medals one as a result of entries submitted, finding that, the correlation between the expected medals and medals won is r = 0.975. (Bottom line: extra kudos to Oregon brewers for far exceeding the ratio. And Im overdue for a return to New Mexico. Thx James Fick for sharing the link.)
