As everyone knows, the City Council Meeting was tonight, it lasted - TopicsExpress

As everyone knows, the City Council Meeting was tonight, it lasted almost 5 hours. Some Council Members spoke in favor of saving part to all of the facade but most concerns were with traffic and parking. The Council did not approve demo permits for any of the buildings tonight. However, they did approve the overall proposed project pending traffic studies and mitigation - they are going to do traffic studies which will be discussed tentatively at the September 22nd Council meeting. Honestly, it was a bit confusing, even some of the Council members and their staff were a little confused about where the Council stood and what exactly they wanted to happen next. But we do know the traffic studies might affect the overall size of the project, which might affect the developers willingness to save more of the facade. (Admittedly, this is a long shot.) And Save the SMB Streamline Moderne is still fighting though, along with other local preservation groups (especially Los Angeles Conservancy). Some of the great things that happened tonight - we found out there were close to 200 letters written in support of the building; there were about 30-40 people who spoke in support; and Welton Beckets son, Bruce Becket surprised us by showing up at the meeting- he spoke personally about how, when they drove past the building, his father would tell him how important the building was and he said, as an architect, the building would be relatively easy to incorporate into the proposed new development. Theres still a lot to digest. And we will keep you all posted. Thank you all so much for hanging in there with us. Its not over. We promise to keep you updated.
