As global warming continues unabated, industrial civilization races closer to a climate tipping point, where enough stored methane has been released into the atmosphere that the warming it creates becomes indefinitely self-amplifying. The consequence would be not only a dire threat to human society but to all life on earth, producing an unimaginable acceleration of the already ongoing mass extinction event.
