As it is world diabetes day, Im remembering the day my mom got sick. I remember driving about 45 minutes every day to visit her in the hospital and trying desperately to get my shifts covered at work so I could stay with her. I would lay with her in the hospital bed and try to make her laugh. I brought her a stuffed dog that she still has today. The day Devon and I picked her up from the hospital, she was equipped with prescriptions for old diabetes needles and outdated materials. We dropped her off at home and then went and got her $500 worth of prescribed needles and insulin, and lastly picked up subway sandwiches for everyone. We were all starving including my mom, but she couldnt eat until she took insulin. She couldnt figure it out, and I was terrified of needles at the time, so Devon sat with her and tried to help her. They called the hospital and finally figured it out so she could eat. I remember seeing her sitting on her bed eating this hours old sub, looking so defeated. That was December 22nd, 2011. She has come such a long way since then, with knowledge and an updated kit! I am no longer afraid of needles and sometimes oblige her weird fascination with checking other peoples sugar. I am so proud of my mom for living with this disease and thankful that diabetes is manageable and that she tackles living with it every day! I love you meem! #findacure #t1d Lori Woodruff Kirk ♡
