As kids about this time of year we were always given 2 options for a summer vacation. The 1st was going to the fair for the week or 2 go to Cedar Point for a day. We always chose Cedar Point. This was a huge deal to us kids. Mom was always so busy getting this planned. She would either pick out our best summer clothes or we would get new. Then she would go grocery shopping and pack a huge cooler. Dad worked at Hostess and would bring all the snacks. And I mean ALL. Pies, Twinkies, Snow Balls, cupcakes, ect. The night before we all got our baths and was sent to bed early because we would leave by 6AM. Of course I never slept very good because my mind was full of excitement. 5AM comes and time for everyone to get up. We finish packing the car and off we go. We drive to the Bowling Green rest stop take a break and continue to the Fremont rest area. Here we would stop for a short bit for something to eat that mom had packed. Next stop Cedar Point. WOOO HOOOOO!!!!! We finally reach the Cedar Point Causeway. Now we are really excited. We can see the tall needle ride off in the distance. Driving over the Causeway was kind of weird sounding because a lot of it was metal grating. But the view of Lake Erie is amazing. By now all the car windows are down with the warm breeze blowing in along with the smell. As we get closer to the parking lot the driving lanes are fast filling up till we are down to a crawl. But thats ok because all the cars surrounding you are full of people yelling and screaming full of excitement like us. We are also checking out all the license plates seeing where people are coming from. The Cedar Point police guide us to where we are to park. After we park dad checks my watch to make sure its in time with his. Off we go. We get in line and they put a wrist band on thats a small string with a metal clip with a certain color. Mom & Dad give us a time that we are to meet them at the arcade and set us free. We take off running for the carousel and was always our 1st ride. We ride the Pirate Ride, The Earthquake, The Needle, and on and on lol. But the Fun House at my age then was one of my favorites with the slanted floor maze that you really had to hold onto the railing as not to fall or the opposite where you was leaning clear into the railing and pushing yourself away from it because of the extreme slant. Then you would come to the upside down part. How many of you remember the old woman in the funhouse rocking in here rocker knitting with the ball of yarn on the floor beside her and her cat playing with it beside her with its tail wagging under the leg of the chair about to be squashed? Not to mention all of this was going on from the ceiling not the floor. We would meet mom and dad at the arcade and head back out to the parking lot. We would pop the trunk and dig in for lunch. I remember one time I told dad during lunch I wanted to ride the Blue Streak (I learned later it had been years since dad had been on a roller coaster). I think I shocked him and he asks me if I am sure. He talks it over with mom and I remember mom was worried about my height. Dad tells her they will measure him and if he is tall enough he will ride it with me. I so remember walking up to that stick and the lady saying he is just a hair under the height. I kind of hunch down disappointed and she says but he is close enough. I look up at her and she gives me a wink. The closer we get of course Im getting very nervous. Dad says well your 1st time you need to be in the front. We finally get on the ride and I hear my brothers and sister yelling. I look over at the fence before we take off and see them and mom waving at us. I am waving back when the coaster starts to take off. Scared the hell out of me and I hold on for dear life lol. Off we go and what an amazing ride it was speeding over hills and coming up out of your seat a little. After the ride dad gives us a time to meet again and off we go to Frontier Land for the last part of our day. Not just for the water rides but walking around watching glass blowers and blacksmiths ect was so neat. The train with the skeletons in the woods, the sky lift I could just keep going on. But as with all good things it must come to an end. We head back to the car and eat again before we leave. Leaving is just as much fun as coming because everyone in the cars around are still yelling, laughing and having a good time. We take one last look back at the Needle before we lay back and are all soon asleep. But we knew we would be back next year. :)
