As military administrator of Lagos State, Raji Rasaki ordered and supervised the demolition of Maroko and threw thousands of families into years of uncertainty and in many cases, abject penury and misery. Though merely a child at the time, I still remember he only gave the inhabitants of Maroko, believed to be the largest ghetto in Africa, just seven days to evacuate. I saw corpses of people who probably died of shock as they watched their properties pulled to the ground by bulldozers. Those horrid sights were forever etched in my mind. Families were shattered, in many cases, beyond remedy. I was a born in Maroko and took my first steps on the white sand of Aina koku Street. I attended Patient Primary School, popularly called Onimalu because of its proximity to a cattle-rearing Fulani community, where my mind was formed by brilliant teachers. I can still taste the milky rich candies that were sold for a dozen a kobo by the cattle rearers... Maroko was cornered and shared amongst the rich and mighty. A piece land in Maroko today is among the most expensive anywhere in the world. In fact, the place is hardly called by its original name again. Now hes been chosen to participate in the National Conference. This country always finds a way of compensating and honouring soulless monsters.
