As of 2015, you can now ride a driverless car in California, legally. California becomes one of 4 states in the US, starting with Nevadas ground-breaking legislation, to allow driverless cars on its roads. npr.org/2013/01/01/168417039/2013s-new-laws-govern-driverless-cars-employee-passwords The CA DMV was given 2 years to set up a legal framework, and based on its statements, has spent that 2 years doing nothing. Googles current driverless car prototype has no steering wheel or other parts a driver would use, so it may be that design is too far-future for now. arstechnica/cars/2014/12/california-dmv-will-miss-its-deadline-for-driverless-car-regulations/ Nonetheless once the bureaucracy wakes up and does its job, the law sitting on the books in CA will go into effect, and well have 4 states in the union - 2 of them contiguous - where you can get into a machine and let it drive itself. In Florida, you can even legally text while it does so. cyberlaw.stanford.edu/wiki/index.php/Automated_Driving:_Legislative_and_Regulatory_Action In fact in its style, Florida took a weirdly hands-off approach: The law they passed basically says, Well, we dont ban driverless cars, so, do what you want. But if you are in one, go ahead and text. Its an especially short law with little to clarify some of the more obvious concerns, like whos at fault if it hits someone. wptv/news/state/florida-embraces-self-driving-cars-as-engineers-and-lawmakers-prepare-for-the-new-technology Welcome to the future... .
