As of Wednesday, at least 13 people had picked up an application to run for Springfield City Council, according to a list City Clerk Brenda Cirtin provided in response to a News-Leader inquiry. That figure includes incumbents Bob Stephens, the mayor, and Jerry Compton, who could both see opponents as they seek reelection. While the News-Leader has previously reported that some of the individuals planned to run — often because they informed a reporter of their intentions — the list provided by Cirtin provides the most comprehensive look at candidates voters could see on ballots for the April municipal election. A few caveats: Interested individuals can still pick up applications, so more candidates could emerge. Additionally, picking up an application doesnt necessarily mean an individual will ultimately file to run for council. Finally, Cirtin emphasized that the list includes individuals who had no objection to having their information being disseminated, meaning there may be others who have picked up an application but requested their information be withheld. Applications must be returned with a petition that contains 200 signatures of registered Springfield voters for a general council seat, and 100 signatures for a zone council seat (from voters who reside in that zone). Candidates could file the petitions starting Tuesday, and can continue to do so until Jan. 20. In alphabetical order by last name, here are the individuals who have picked up an application, along with the seat or seats the individual expressed interest in: • Steve Boswell: General Seat D • Justin Burnett: Zone 2 • Jerry Compton: Zone 3 • Len Eagleburger: General Seat C • Gary D. Fine: General Seat C • Kristi S. Fulnecky: General Seat C • Danny Lee Henderson: Mayor • Ken McClure: General Seat D • Jeff Paul: General Seat C • Mike Schilling: Mayor, Zone 3, General Seat C, General Seat D • Mark Seitz: Mayor • Bob Stephens: Mayor • Buckley Buck Van Hooser: Zone 2 General seats are voted on by all city residents. Zone seats are voted on by residents of each zone. The list provided by Cirtin doesnt include Andrew McPherson, who previously told the News-Leader he planned to run for General Seat C. A message left with McPherson Wednesday afternoon was not immediately returned. Fulnecky, Stephens and Van Hooser have already returned an application and been certified to appear on the April ballot.
