As part of our recruitment process for Wild Souths Volunteer - TopicsExpress

As part of our recruitment process for Wild Souths Volunteer Wilderness Ranger program, we ask potential recruits why they want to be a VWR. With permission but request of anonymity, we are allowed to share the following story; Why do I want to be a Volunteer Wilderness Ranger? Please note that this answer comes from a person in a technological career, in a technological job, in a technological world, and who used a technological device to send it to you. How ironic it is for such a technology-oriented person to want to be a Volunteer Wilderness Ranger. I believe that so much of what is real is being lost to that which is digital. People dont go see sunsets anymore; they simply search for an image for it. They dont go out and experience a campfire smore anymore; they go to the local store and buy one. Accomplishing a good trek is something they experience from the comfort of ones computer. And lastly, most importantly, they dont let go of the need for digital gratification...They merely reinforce the need for it. I started seeing this at an early age, when I was a kid that played outside all day and then started playing inside with video games. Computers and Technology have always come easy to me and as I grew up I continued on the path to an I.T. career. This just caused me to learn evermore on the inventions of the digital age. After many years in this industry, my original passion for the outdoors has returned with lessons learned. It is important for people to not forget the importance of true wilderness areas. They need to know that we rely on these areas and to have respect for them, to show how places looked before we changed the landscape, and to be good stewards for the few that remain, or they, too, may become something else that we cannot experience and only read about.
