As part of the 150th Anniversary of the Battle Fort Stevens, my daughter was stationed as a volunteer Sunday at tiny Battleground National Cemetery on Georgia Ave in DC near Silver Spring where 41 Union soldiers are buried. We had a beautiful ceremony with spirituals by the Washington Revels a cappella group Jubilee Voices in period costume. As the National Park Service Ranger read the names of the soldiers buried there we placed a flag at each tombstone. A historian also told us more about how the cemetery came to be and what we are doing to preserve the Civil War Defenses of Washington. This was a beautiful way to cap a wonderful educational weekend of history. Bravo to the National Park Service for bringing it alive and engaging the surrounding neighborhood, area churches and community in the anniversary.
