As protests continue across the US and the world for #BlackLivesMatter and against police violence, this upcoming film, Selma, shows us brutal scenes that are unfortunately too familiar. But they also show the power of people united in the name of justice. Selma is the story of how Martin Luther King Jr. led a civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, which culminated in President Lyndon B. Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act in 1965. And 50 years later in 2014, Hollywood just announced Selmas director, Ava DuVenay, as the very first Black woman to be nominated for Best Director.
