As some of you may have read on the Classicists List, the next MOISA Seminar is going to take place from July 6th to 11th 2015! I hope to see many of you in Riva del Garda, where Andrew Barker, Eleonora Rocconi and Egert Pöhlmann are going to lead the morning sessions on Aristoxenus Elementa harmonica and fragments. Please spread the news! More detailed information below. #Seminar ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10th Moisa Summer Seminar on Ancient Greek and Roman Music Riva del Garda, 6-11 July 2015 Every summer since 2004, the Music Department at the Ionian University hosted week-long seminar on ancient Greek music, which was attended by students and scholars from several European, American and Asiatic countries. This wonderful scientific event has unfortunately been discontinued due to the severe economic crisis that hit Greece during recent years. Given the importance of this event for the community of scholars involved in ancient Greek music, since 2014 the newly-founded Arion Society has decided to bring the Seminar back to life in a new location: Riva del Garda, in the North of Italy. Following the customary format, the programme will comprise morning sessions devoted to the study of the particular text or topic chosen for that year and evening lectures on other topics of interest to students of the subject. In previous years, the texts and topics examined in the morning sessions have included ps-Plutarch De musica, Music in Comedy, Music and Women, Music in Plato’s Laws and in Aristotle’s Politics and the ps-Aristotelian Problemata. In 2014 we shall be examining Aristoxenus’ works, focussing in particular on the Elementa harmonica and the fragments. The seminars will be led by Dr Eleonora Rocconi (University of Pavia), Prof. Andrew Barker (University of Birmingham) and Prof. Egert Pöhlmann (University of Erlangen). The afternoons are free for swimming, sight-seeing, sleeping or what you will. The morning sessions will take place in the charming setting of the Chiesetta Miralago, an ancient deconsecrated chapel in a quiet park on the shore of the Garda lake, which hosts a variety of cultural activities ranging from academic events to theatrical and artistic performances. This informal space will allow the participants to sit around a large table, a setting that encourages the open exchange of ideas that is so typical of and vital for this Seminar. The evening lectures will take place in the Conference Room of the Civic Museum, housed in Riva’s ancient castle, the Rocca, on the central square of the town. This is a very important part of our programme, in that it provides an overview on the most recent developments in the field as well as a chance to improve current projects thanks to the feedback and questions of the audience. In the past we have had participants from about a dozen different countries, and therefore for the seminars and lectures we obviously have to choose a language which is more or less common property. The language we use is English. The fee for participation is 50 euros. All participants should let the organizers know that they intend to come, preferably by the end of May. They will need to arrange their own accommodation, but organizers would be happy to provide some suggestions in different price ranges. All participants, as well as any other person who is interested in supporting research in ancient Greek and Roman music, are warmly encouraged to join the Arion Society. For information on how to join, just send an email to the Society’s address or visit our Facebook page (https://facebook/arionsociety). There is no fixed fee to join the Arion Society, as we believe that money should not prevent people from partaking in cultural enterprises and activities, but we would be very grateful if you could support our activities by sending a contribution via Paypal on our Facebook page.
