As some of you may know, Ive been hunting a particular coyote for a couple of years now... Ive named him El Fantasma, The Ghost... Ive missed him 4 times... I think my bullets have just passed thru his lifeless body leaving him unharmed... Ive killed lots and lots of coyotes... But hes different. A Ghost! Hes almost solid brown... Like Dale and Dani... With a few black markings... Especially the 2 black stripes down the top of his snout from the corners of his eyes to his nose. Well, I was just out at HIS place and I started blowing my call... I was simulating a rabbit in distress... And low and behold, I caught movement across the creek in a clear cut. El Fantasma...in the flesh... Or was he? He wasnt falling for my trick completely, but thanks to my infinite wisdom about coyotes, I was able to convince him that he didnt have a choice. He had to protect his territory... I grabbed a dominant Male call and gave him one single challenge howl and Lawd Have Mercy!!! He charged across the deep creek and popped out from under the fence... I dropped the call, grabbed my trusty rifle, placed the crosshairs on his shoulder and let the thunder roll! Turns out, hes NOT a ghost!!! Just as I squeezed the trigger, he lunged forward as he started to run... He realized hed been tricked and wanted no part of it... So my bullet, instead of going right thru his pump station, went thru his ribs... He wheeled around, dove back across the creek and ran out into the clear cut... Now, I dont have permission to be on that property so I couldnt retrieve him...which is making me sick at my stomach... I went to where he was when I shot and found bone chunks, hair, flesh and lots of bubbly blood... Clearly a lung/rib cage shot... I have ZERO doubt that it was El Fantasma and I have ZERO doubt that he is dead... Im a law abiding citizen so Im not going to trespass to find him. Im in the process of funding someone that can legally give me permission to cross the creek and recover him. If it was any other coyote, I wouldnt give it another thought but this ones personal!! This was my 5th shot at him... 5th times the charm!!! Im gonna try to get him tomorrow at least for pictures...
