As someone who has DJed as a profession for enough money to make a living, I am astounded when DJs dont expand beyond the simple Top 40 mentality. There are -so- many great bands out there that never will make it onto the top 40. They can make songs on a level that will fill a dance floor that lots of top 40 musicians could never -dream- of attaining. Who does the best job of introducing people to new music? Its not Pandora, it sure as hell isnt Spotify -- its DJs and friends who happen to have broad tastes in music. tl;dr, if youre a DJ like me, you should have a BROAD knowledge base in music. Top 40 music doesnt inherently suck, but there is SO much more that you can play than the crap on the radio. P.S. Listen to Tove Lo. Listen to Lykke Li. Listen to AlunaGeorge. Listen to Jungle. Listen to Gorgon City. :)
