As students, it is important to “take,” but then there is a transition, which is to “take” in order to share. Korach never made that shift in the energetics of moving from left pole (receiving for self, alone) to right pole (receiving in order to share), and then ultimately becoming the central pole of the three columns of the Tree of Life. Korach never shifted from being a taker, and Korach’s wife, according to the Talmud, was pushing him into becoming an even bigger taker, while the wife of O’n, one of Korach’s cohorts, tried to talk her man out of getting involved with Korach’s “cause” (Talmud Bav’li, Sanhedrin 110a). According to the Talmud Korach’s wife said: “Look, Moses has all the money. He is building a tabernacle, but he just wants the money for himself, and he’s given all the goodies to his brother Aharon.” What does this tell us? The people around us affect us. As we look at this story, we are looking at Korach, Dathan and Aviram (the sons of Eliav), and O’n (son of Peleth). They are of the tribe of Reuven, and Reuven’s tribe was situated adjacent to Korach’s tent (Midrash Bamidbar Rabbah 3:12). We are affected by the people around us in a variety of interesting ways. ~ Gabriel Cousens, MD Torah as a Guide to Enlightenment (Parsha Korach)
