As the daughter of a mechanical engineer (and with a family full - TopicsExpress

As the daughter of a mechanical engineer (and with a family full of engineers), I just had to love Scotty. When the new movies began and I got excited (yes, I did... after a certain amount of hemming and hawing and general qualms) and then proceeded to fall in love with the first movie (Star Trek, 2009) -- the first of the ones I like to call JJ-Trek. However, I had certain reservations and still do about both. I thought Chris Pine did a bang-up job in both movies. I love his portrayal of one of my favorite heroes. I thought John Cho is superb as Mr. Sulu. I still have some reservations about Zachary Quinto (an actor I love) as Spock. Maybe its because Ive always been a Spock-girl. Spock is truly my idea of the ideal man. Fundamentally emotionally flawed yet nobly striding to Do The Right Thing Forever. Quintos portrayal in the first movie skirted a few pitfalls but came out on top and I heaved a big sigh at the end of my first showing. Seriously, the way he looks -- he could be Leonard Nimoys clone -- he could easily have taken the easy road, but he didnt. He didnt have the gravitas and the baritone, but he did have the pathos and the quiet reserve down. The others fall in behind these two... with, so, sooo surprisingly, Simon Pegg as Scotty bringing up the rear (okay, Im not a big fan of Saldanas Uhura but Ill shelve that discussion for another time). The sad facts are that 1) I adore Pegg. His writing, his acting, and his entire persona and talent are top-notch. I am in awe of his prowess with a pen/typewriter. I am in love with his movies. I want his career. My sadness stems from the fact that 2) this is not his fault. JJ Abrams, lets face it, is not even Joss Whedon. Hes an emotional lightweight (in his career, I dont know the man, of course). So hes gone and made Scotty a comic everyman. Neither of which he ever was. Lets hope Bob Orci knows what to do with him from behind the camera! Read below for Simon Peggs analysis of Mr. Scott as he should be written and acted...
