As we approach the better weather the movement of people between areas will become more prevalent. This obviously also includes members of the criminal fraternity. Being located in a rural community can have its own challenges, and ensuring the safety of numerous outbuildings can be an issue in itself. This may not be high on the list of priorities for owners but some of the assets you have around about your property can be very expensive to replace. This can also have a bearing on your ability to do work in or around your property. As part of a general awareness of the issues around about rural safety it is planned to issue a series of information bulletins identifying current rural crime trends and security advice around about these issues. May/ June Challenges Previous years crime statistics for Fife Division show that the spring and early summer periods, show an increase in dishonesty crimes associated with open or insecure rural buildings. High value tools, quad bikes, unattended metal articles and in some case farm vehicles tend to be the target. Current fuel prices can also make fuel tanks on your land an attractive target. Some very inexpensive amendments to your current security provisions can save issues later. 1.Consider buying a good quality padlock(s) for your outbuildings and fitting lock shields. 2.Replace hinge fastenings with bolts rather than easily removable screw fittings 3.Ensure high value tools and vehicles are stored in a secure shed. Do not leave the keys in any vehicles, secure these in a separate location or secure key safe. 4.Consider fitting a diesel tank alarm, or isolation switch, or place within a secure shed or fenced area 5.Consider upgrading lighting or fitting inexpensive alarm systems or dummy boxes around about valuable items 6.Erect signage in prominent areas to your property highlighting area is covered by CCTV 7.If possible secure all entry gates 8.If you see any suspicious persons or vehicle, phone the police immediately. You may not be the target but a nearby resident may. Police can circulate this information via Police Rural Watch to ensure all people in your area are more vigilant. 9.To become a member of Rural Watch and receive emails regarding local issues, suspicious vehicles or movement in rural areas, and general security advice for free, contact 101 and ask to have your details passed to a Community Safety Officer.
