As we drove back from a wrenching day at Birkenau-Auschwitz on Fri - TopicsExpress

As we drove back from a wrenching day at Birkenau-Auschwitz on Fri we began the transition from the horror in recalling that place to a beautiful Shabbat in Cracow. Our guide told us about Shlomo Carlebach experiencing a similar day in Poland when he visited. That evening he composed a magnificent niggun- his only one without words. Here it is on you-tube. Listen as it shifts from mournful to incredibly joyful. As our guide Nadav played it for us many of us knew this niggun and joined in exuberantly. https://m.youtube/watch?v=uPbNv4g-kRM Our group member Joel Green talked about the prayer imagery in the second blessing of the Amidah of God who keeps faith with those who sleep in the dust. Nadav countered with the verse from Lecha Doda that we would soon sing at Kabbalat Shabbat that night- Arise and shake off the dust of the earth. Shabbat could not come too soon as a respite to very difficult days. We would at least return to the comforts of a lovely hotel and the beautiful city of Cracow.
