As we embark on a new year, we wanted to take a moment to share some highlights from the 2013 Buddhist Studies in India program for undergraduate students through Antioch Education Abroad (AEA), and upcoming deadlines for the 2014 fall semester program in Bodh Gaya and AEA scholarship. During the first three weeks of the 2013 program as part of the required Meditation Traditions course, students practiced Vipassana meditation with our teacher U Hla Myint from Burma. During the second three weeks they practiced Zen meditation with Sensai Ekai Korematsu, and during the last three weeks they did Tibetan meditation with Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche and Venerable Lobsang Tenba, who each represented a slightly different tradition of Tibetan practice. For their three-week Independent Study period towards the end of the program, some students traveled to the Himalayan region of India or Nepal to explore topics like: Buddhist monastic education, Tibetan diaspora literature, ecology and Buddhist practice, sacred landscape, and Tibetan medicine. Others went to South India where they stayed in a Zen center that is located in the midst of a coffee plantation, or to Mysore in order to compare Hindu yoga practice with Buddhist meditation. Yet another group of students headed to Burma to examine the modern manifestations of the forest monastic tradition or Burmese temple architecture. As everyone returned to Bodh Gaya in December to give presentations on their research, the Theravada countries of Thailand, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Laos, and Burma celebrated ten days of chanting at the Mahabodhi Temple. This year the Burmese were in charge of the festival, and it was quite an event—opening with a parade including traditional Burmese musicians, as well as participating monks and dignitaries. Here’s a quick reminder of the approaching deadlines for the 2014 Buddhist Studies in India fall program, and AEA scholarship: Buddhist Studies in India (fall semester) application deadline: March 15 AEA Scholarship deadline: March 30 (fall programs) Please encourage your students to contact us for additional program and cost information, as well as an application, which may also be found on our website: antioch.edu/aea/
