As we say in the hood, Im about to go in on this. Im gonna refute every one of your points. 1. Individual achievement is a big factor in soccer. Ask Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo. If you put those two on any team, they instantly become favorites. If you become great at soccer, you are revered. If you make a bad mistake, it can cost you your life. Ask Andres Escobar, no wait you cant because hes dead. 2. Moms like soccer because it is an easy sport to handle, all you need are cleats, socks, shinguards, and if you are a goalie, gloves. 3. Hockey has just as many if not more scoreless ties as soccer and I dont see anyone complaining. The difference is that ties in hockey are called overtime losses. I thought you either win or lose. Not you either win, kinda win, or lose. American football is a bad template for scoreless ties because for much of the games history, if the game went to overtime if you ran the ball back for a touchdown or got within field goal range and scored, the game was over. the other team often didnt get a chance to score. 4. The prospect of humiliation or major injury is the greatest in soccer. If you make a dumb mistake, an entire country will hate you and some people in that country may want to kill you and are serious about it. Last time I checked, I havent heard anyone wanting to kill LeBron James for not winning the title this year. 5. Not being able to use your hands is a plus for soccer. You have to be skilled to be able to run for 90+ minutes controlling and shooting a ball with only your feet. 6. We are not being force fed soccer. It is what the consumers want and the market is supplying that want. If soccer wasnt catching on and growing in popularity, explain why 10,000+ people showed up in Grant Park to watch the US play in the World Cup. Also, explain why the majority of MLS teams play in soccer specific stadiums. If there was no demand, why would people pay millions of dollars to have these facilities built? 7. Soccer being foreign had nothing to do with nothing. If that were the case, people would only eat hamburgers, hotdogs, and apple pie and drive only cars made in Detroit. 8. The only reason we use the english vs the metros system or do the things we do is because that is what we have been doing all along. Old habits die hard, but eventually they do die. 9. Soccer is growing in the states whether you want to believe it or not. Soccer is growing because there is more access to it via TV and the internet. The ratings are growing every year. The majority of MLS teams have their own stadiums. In the past, there was no market for soccer because there was no access to it like we have now. Comparing the NFL to soccer is a bad comparison because the NFL has been more available to Americans than soccer. If you have a TV, you can watch NFL games on over the air broadcasts. If you want to watch soccer games, you either had to have cable/satellite TV, learn spanish and watch it on their channel, or go to a bar to watch it, but this is changing. If you wanted to watch a soccer match live, before 1998, you had to wait until one of the foreign teams came to the states to play because MLS or any top tier league didnt exist. In all, even if you disagree with the political decisions that the United States has made, you have to respect the gains that soccer has made in this country. 25 years ago, soccer didnt really exist in this country. Before that, we had no real national team or real top tier league. In 25 years, weve gone from virtually nothing, to a thriving and growing professional soccer league, a national team that maybe cant consistently beat the big boys but can play with them and be a threat. Admit it or not, soccer is here to stay. In closing, as Drake would say Started From The Bottom, Now We Here!
