As winter winds down (believe it or not spring is coming) we must all be mindful of all the ice and snow around our homes. Should it melt rapidly water can get into your home in areas normally unaffected. If you havent already done so (I know its cold outside) clean ice and debris from your gutters. Take the time to shovel clear paths from your downspout ends away from the foundation as frozen ground wont absorb runoff. Never forget, our basements are just holes in the ground so water will want to flow down into it if it can. This is also true of crawlspace areas. If you have a sump pump make certain to check it for proper operation. Outside walkout basements, clear snow drifts and ice away so water on the patio wont buildup and be trapped by the doors and flow in through or under the threshold. Taking some action as preventative measures can help prevent lots of trouble. Remember, nature always wins unless proper precautions are taken. Be safe and God bless us all.
