As with Nate, I will post my general thoughts here and open myself up for comment and ridicule. This will also make it easy to ignore if you dont care about my perspective. First point: Its called the alumni lounge, so is it more for me and Nate than for the rest of you? Okay, thats ridiculous- ignore point one. Point two: My perspective is bound to be very different from all of yours because of my time on campus. I was a student at Practical Bible (now Davis) College from 1999-2003, and remained a fairly regular participant on campus until a few years ago. Until recent renovations, the alumni lounge was never comfortable or inviting (though there were always couches, even if significantly less comfortable than the couches of the last few years). Our nickname for the AL was the sauna because its directly above the boiler room for all of C-D, and it was always crazy hot in there. If there was a tv in there, it was because we wheeled one in from a classroom that wasnt using it. All of the things that have been mentioned as having been done before the current changes were done way back then. We had study sessions and worked on group projects. We discussed life, love, God, religion, the Bible, government, current events, and whatever else happened to come up. Sometimes naps happened. So did PC. Games were played. Homework was completed... occasionally even before it was due! Languages were translated. Issues were debated. Gospel was shared. Friendships were built and strengthened. Songs were sung. Pictures of former presidents of the college and their Bibles were displayed. All of that happened in a place that nobody considered higher than 3rd or 4th best option for place to get together. The best I can tell, most of the complaints about the changes are that it is now less comfortable and leans more toward a studious atmosphere than a social one. Maybe thats what they want and thats why they made the changes they did. Maybe to have the social aspect you had before youll have to find a different place to do that. Before you push too hard to get things changed back, try to find out why they were changed to begin with. Dont assume, ask... respectfully. Maybe they didnt realize the new set up would be unpopular and will consider changing them back for you. Maybe they had meetings and made calculated decisions about their goals for the lounge and made the changes with the resulting new atmosphere very intentionally. If thats the case, you will have to either adjust to the new environment (which is still by far more comfortable and inviting than we ever dreamed of), or find a different location more suited to the atmosphere to which you had become accustomed.
