As you may know, in the early morning hours on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, Mississauga Fire responded to an industrial alarm on Thamesgate Drive in Mississauga. Unknown to crews on scene, dangerous chemicals and pesticides were being stored inside. In a split second, an explosion powerful enough to collapse the building ripped through the warehouse. The fire from the explosion leapt hundreds of feet into the sky. After re-gaining their composure, the crews realized that three of our brother firefighters were trapped inside, underneath the rubble. Captains Bruce Hicks and Derek Wilson, Acting Captains Brian Chapman and Marcus Middleton and Firefighters Matt Attwell, Anthony Colabufalo, Larry Martin, Travis Robbins and Daryl Roy re-entered the building to rescue the trapped firefighters. On November 27, 2014, these nine Mississauga Firefighters were awarded the Ontario Medal for Firefighter Bravery for their heroic, courageous actions to rescue three trapped brothers. Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell said These extraordinary individuals inspire us with their courage and devotion to the public good. I am privileged to be presenting these medals for bravery to Ontarios finest firefighters and police officers. The Mississauga Fire Fighters Association is extremely proud of the selfless acts of courage and bravery that these nine firefighters showed in the face of unimaginable conditions and circumstances. These firefighters truly represent the best qualities of the fire service.
