As you may know, tax reform is a hot topic on Capitol Hill, and as summer temperatures rise, so does the pressure to make the case for federal historic tax credits (HTC). The leaders of the Senate Finance Committee have asked all senators to identify, by July 26, which tax breaks, deductions and credits should be put back in to the tax code. The Finance Committee has adopted a “blank slate approach,” meaning that the historic tax credit will be stripped from the tax code, and only added back in if enough senators make a compelling case for it. The time to act is now! Please ask your senators to support the HTC. For you convenience, a sample email has been prepared. It may be customized with your personal comments. Losing the historic tax credit would mean losing the federal government’s most significant financial investment in historic preservation, by far.
