Ash Grove is day # 74 for some Amazing people that are bicycling across our country for Muscular Sclerosis research and awareness! BIKE THE US FOR MSs Team is on a 4,295 mile trek that began in Yorktown, Virginia on June 1, and in 61 days will arrive at their destination- San Francisco. Twenty-one people from all across the US and England have individually raised $3,795 and by journeys end are hoping to raise $200,000. Jan a segment rider has MS. She rode in Virginia and skipped Kentucky but is back on the road again in Missouri. Natalie is a graduate of Virginia Tech, Sarah is from Massachusetts. Gary and Claudia flew in from England and came to ride. Clair is the route leader and Ryan is a college professor. They average 75 miles per day and also have a support vehicle that follows them carrying all their gear so they dont have to carry heavy packs along the route. Tim Blackstone from Monument Valley, Colorado said, We just met Tommy in Hartville, Mo. He has the progressive form of MS for which there is no medication or treatments of any kind. The people just get worse and worse. Somethings got to be done! Its only been since 1989 that they discovered what was causing the disease. It is a progressive and debilitating disease. If you have the relapse form, they have medications for it, however, if you have the progressive form there is nothing they can do for you; you just get worse and worse. There are 400,000 people effected with MS in the US. Something must be done! BIKE THE US FOR MS is also making dreams come true along their way. In Virginia they bought a handicap assessable van for a woman. They also presented a check of $10,000 to another woman with MS whose husband had just lost his job. They also planted a beautiful herb garden for another person suffering with the disease . Everyone here is on the trip for their own reason, Tim said. Three years ago I started biking to lose weight. I lost 200 lbs. riding 8,000 miles around in a great big circle. Now Im riding in a straight line and making it count. So, if you get up on Thursday morning and see twenty-one cyclists riding toward Kansas, wave goodbye to them! And if possible go to their website: biketheusforms.org and make a donation.
