Asi Taulava moving to Ginebra? MANILA, Philippines – Meralco has opened itself to a possible deal that could ship Filipino-Tongan player Asi Taulava to Barangay Ginebra. According to Meralco Bolts’ coach Ryan Gregorio, they are willing to give up the rights for Taulava for the right offer. “Asi has signified his intention to play for Ginebra … hindi namin haharangin yun,” Gregorio told Spin.ph’s Snow Badua. “Pero Ginebra has to talk to us, offer us - we will say yes or no (to the proposal).” Taulava left Meralco in 2012 after declining a two-year contract extension with maximum salary. He joined the San Miguel Beermen in the ASEAN Basketball League and led the Beermen to their first ABL title. However, Meralco maintains hold of Taulava’s PBA rights. Gregorio admitted that Taulava’s departure in 2012 left a huge hole in their team, thereby disrupting their PBA plans. A year later, he said they have learned to adjust without the 6’9” center which is why they are ready to give up their rights to Taulava. “Pero ngayon, sanay na kami nang wala siya. That’s why we can already let him go - he has no value to our team now eh,” said Gregorio. He, however, clarified that they are aren’t giving away Taulava for a paltry offer. “We are willing to listen, but of course, not for a song,” Gregorio said. The 40-year-old Taulava recently earned the Most Valuable Player award for his heroics while suiting up for San Miguel. He, however, said he wishes to join barangay Ginebra before he retires from basketball. “My dream B4 retiring is 2 play 1 season 4 GSM. Hope 1 day I get dat chance! I just want 2 feel da support of best loyal fans. #Praying,” he said through his Twitter account.
