Asking one of those embarrassing questions: ordering a bunch of 4140 for a variety of projects. When Ive previously ordered from Alro, its been 4140 CFA which I believe means cold finish annealed. Machine easily and has worked great. However, the quote I just got listed everything as Med Carb Alloy HT DCF 4140-4142 Modified with a few being either HT or HT DCF. 4142 seems to be a harder material that is a tad less machinable (but still quite machinable, it appears) and doesnt need heat treated to have decent hardness (laymans terms). Can anyone help/advise? Plain 4140 IS cheaper than this 4140/4142, so need to know if theres a reason to spend more. (FYI the projects vary, but small motor mounts, connector rods, base plates for press project, split-clamp arm for machine, etc)
