Assalamualaikum wr wb. Alhamdulillah, we have reached the last 10 days of Ramadhan. May Allah gives us the strength to constantly do ibadah on these last few days. Amin. The topic that we are sharing today is about zakat. Zakat is the 3rd pillar of Islam and is the determined share of wealth prescribed by Allah S.W.T. to be distributed to the 8 categories entitled to receive it. It is an ibadah in terms of wealth. A symbol of Islamic social justice, Zakat cleanses your soul, purifies and grows your wealth while eradicating poverty. From Surah Al-Baqarah verse And establish prayer and give Zakat, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves - you will find it with Allah. Indeed, Allah of what you do, is Seeing. There are 2 types of zakat: 1. Zakat on wealth Zakat on wealth is obligatory to all muslims whose nisab has reached. There is a specific rate that one has to pay which is 2.5% of his/her wealth. It can be done once the haul is reached at any time of the year. you can check more information about nisab and haul by watching this video youtu.be/9pxCScjU_1Q?list=PLEBA27AB149B9216F 4 Conditions of Zakat on wealth: -The person is a Muslim. -The person has full ownership of the wealth. - Nisab is reached (Nisab is the market value of 86 grams of gold. As of July 2014 is $4550). - Haul is reached (Haul is the Possession of the assets for one Hijrah year or 355 days). 2. Zakat Fitrah Zakat fitrah is also known as Zakat on the Person, Zakat of Ramadan or Zakat Fitri. Zakat Fitrah was obliged in the second year of Hijrah, the same year that fasting in Ramadan was made obligatory. Zakat Fitrah is prescribed as a means of purification for the person who fasts, redressing wrong deeds and undesirable words uttered during fasting. Zakat is also a relief-aid to the needy. Conditions for Zakat 1. Muslim. 2. Possess something (food, goods or cash) in excess of his own needs and all his dependants for the day and night of Eidul Fitri. 3. To observe both periods of end of Ramadan and beginning of Syawal. A person who dies before sunset and a child born after sunset on the night before first of Syawal, are exempted from paying Zakat Fitrah. Zakat Fitrah is an obligation on the person and his dependants such as his wife, children who have not reached maturity and parents. If he is unable to pay Zakat Fitrah for himself and/or his dependants due to certain difficulties, his dependants may pay Zakat Fitrah for themselves and/or for him with his permission. What is important is that Zakat Fitrah payment has been made for every individual. The Zakat Fitrah rate that is obligatory on every person is one sa’ or 2.3kg of the staple food of the territory in which the person is in. In Singapore, the staple food is rice. Since 2005, Muis has introduced a two-tier Zakat Fitrah rate. This is in accordance with the Syari’ah and allows the payer to choose the rate that is most suitable for them based on their daily consumption. Normal Rate ($4.90 per person in 1435H / 2014): Based on the median price of 2.3kg of rice (normal/average grade) that is consumed as a staple. Higher Rate ($7.00 per person in 1435H / 2014): Based on the median price of 2.3kg of rice (higher grade) that is consumed as a staple. The objective of the two-tier system is to provide the ability for everyone to be able to fulfil their Zakat Fitrah obligation and for those who can afford to pay more to do so to further help those in need. Zakat Fitrah payment can be made throughout the month of Ramadan but must be before the start of Eidul Fitri prayers. If it is paid after Eidul Fitri prayers it becomes just an ordinary charity. MUIS has put in so much effort on zakat campaign, you can check them out here: muis.gov.sg/cms/zakat/index.aspx and Allah knows best :) Wassalam.
