Asumussen and Blue Berry Jac: NRHA Non Pro Champions The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship (NAAC) held the first of two finals performances on Friday, December 5. The $232,000-added Cinch NRHA Non Pro Futurity. The show runs through December 6 at Oklahoma State Fair Park in Oklahoma City, Okla. This year’s Futurity had approximately 550 non pro entries and $600,000 in purse money. In all, nearly $30,000 will be paid in nominator incentives. From the last draw in the class, Jesse Asmussen (Maquoketa, Iowa) and his Blue Berry Jac (Wimpys Red Berry x Mainly Jac) marked a 217 to win the level (L) 4 non pro division championship. Asmussen has won more than $220,000 in NRHA competition including a co-championship at the 2012 NRHA Futurity on Smart Chuka. The L4 non pro division championship paid a total of $42,880 with $2,100 of that amount going to nominator Xtra Quarter Horses, LLC. 14-year-old Cade McCutcheon and Golden Survivor (Topsail Whiz x Shining Survivor) won the reserve championship with a 216.5. Cade’s parents, Tom and Mandy McCutcheon, own the 3-year-old mare that was nominated by Oldenburg Farm, LLC. With his showing in the non pro go-round, Cade also won the Youth Non Pro Championship which is determined by go-round score. The L3 and L2 no pro division championship went to Taylor Larson (Whitesboro, Texas) and Wimpys Dolled Up (Wimpys Little Step x Dolled Up Gunner) with a score of 215.5. Their score also landed them in the fourth place position in the L4 non pro division. Larson Performance Horses, Inc. owns the palomino mare and Taylor is her nominator. In all, they won $54,870, including the nominator incentive. Prior to the Futurity, the team earned more than $12,000 after strong showings at the Southwest Reining Horse Association Futurity and All American Quarter Horse Congress Futurity. Teresa Fletcher-Putman (Gainesville, Texas) and Gary Putman’s HA Casper claimed the championship honors in the L1 non pro division with a 209. They placed fourth in the L2, ninth in the L3 and 11th in the L4 non pro division. The cremello stallion is by Lena Spark and out of DA Nic A Tune. The Putman’s earned $25,970 for the effort with $1,370 going to the nominator Hillis Akin Family Partnership. The Prime Time Non Pro Championship and $3,480 went to Ron Thompson Jr (Whitesboro, Texas) and his Magnum Marilynmonroe (Magnum Chic Dream x Ms Mello Yello). Their 216 also gave them third place honors in the L3 non pro division. For this, they won $22,100, plus $1,160 to nominator KO Korral, LLC. Each year, NRHA recognizes the highest scoring first time exhibitor in the Non Pro go round with a championship buckle. In addition, the Non Pro rider’s trainer receives a check for $5,000. This year’s winner was Ryan Birkenfeld (Nazareth, Texas) and his trainer NRHA Professional Melanie Wilhelm (Nazareth, Texas). All non pro champions received a custom Montana Silversmiths buckle, a Center Back pad, a Classic Equine Contour Pedic Reiner pad, Platinum Performance CJ, Purina feed, a SmartPak gift card, $100 Pard’s Western Shop gift card, Equine Oasis Gift card, Shorty’s Caboy Hattery certificate and a $100 Kyle Tack gift card. Champions in L1-L4, as well as the youth champion, received Bob’s Custom Saddle. Rios of Mercedes boots went to L1 through L4 champions. Prime time and youth champions received a pair of Anderson Bean Boots. Each non pro champion was presented with a KO Trading Saddle Stand sponsored by the following proud supporters: L4 - Dubarry of Ireland, L3 - NRHA Inside Reining, L2 and L1 - NRHyA, Youth - Tinsel Jac and Prime Time – Jerry Kimmel. The L4 Non Pro Champion also received a four-horse slant gooseneck trailer with living quarters for one-year of use courtesy of Twister Trailer.
