Aswan... The flourishing borderline and the elegant contact point between different cultures; Egyptian and Nubian. The Greek name Syene (from which the Coptic Suan was derived) stems from ancient Egyptian name Swent. and herein lies the character of modern Aswan. it had been a flourishing borderline market for thousands of years, whenever the ancient Egyptian name Swent means making business or trade as an attractive area of trading between Egypt and Nubian land. the surrounding area was rich in building materials as during the ancient Egyptian history Aswan was the main quarry of the finest and high quality granite, diorite, and Marble from whence builders and sculptures found their sources to enrich the country with several temples, palaces and many other fine arts scattered throughout Egypt. Quartz which was used for polishing and cutting the stones was quarrying from the so-called alabaster quarry north of Aswan and also from the western desert. in the eastern desert there were the iron mines where red ochre was extracted for paint. and the largest sandstone quarry in Egypt lies at Silselah northwards. elshamstravel
