At Buffer we recently closed our $3.5m Series A funding, and as part of it Leo and I each received $1m in cash by selling a portion of our shares. We both thought long and hard and talked a lot about whether to be open about it and share the details. Its part of the term sheet and included in our blog post about the fundraising, but we never felt like we were 100% clear in sharing what it means for me and Leo. In the end we felt like it was our duty to be open about this too. Weve pushed ourselves to be transparent as a company, and its that much easier if were transparent personally too. The interesting thing that weve learned about being transparent as a company is that we both felt it has made us a better company. Were more responsible and more frequently make the choice which is doing the right thing because everything is out in the open. Its refreshing how easy it is to be good when everything is out there, and thats something we both felt wed sacrifice if we were secretive about our cash. Heres a great article from Leo with lots more thoughts along these lines, definitely worth a read:
