At Nizhoni Health Systems, we support efforts to create a greater awareness of different types of #Cancer. For the month of September, we would like to help raise awareness of #Leukemia. Leukemia is cancer of blood cells or bone narrow, which produces blood cells. A person who has leukemia suffers from an abnormal production of blood cells, generally leukocytes (white blood cells). The causes of leukemia are not known. However, several factors have been identified which may increase the risk of getting it such as: family history of leukemia, blood disorders, genetic disorders like Down syndrome, exposure to high levels of radiation and more. There are different types of leukemia, but the most common types are: Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Chronic Myeloid Leukemia and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. Leukemia is usually treated by a hematologist-oncologist. These are doctors who specialize in blood disorders and cancer. Treatment depends upon the type and stage of the cancer.
