At a recent meeting of the Ashford Rotary Club, the clubs first Community and Service award for service and outstandincommitment to the local community was presented to Messrs Muggeridge and Sons Furnishers, of Church Road Ashford by the Ashford Rotary President Vernon Leader. Muggeridge and Sons is over 120 years old having started in Caledonia Road, London before moving to Ashford in 1914. They came first to a shop in Woodthorpe Road and then to their current premises in Church Road where they have been for 50 years. The brothers Stephen and Barry are well known in the town helping and assisting residents in many ways including Ashford on the map and Ashford Pride, besides their business. At the same meeting we welcomed as our speaker Robert Evans who is Surrey County Councillor for Stanwell. He also spent 15 years as a member of the European Parliament and explained how he spent so much time flying to and from Brussels and Strasburg. He also explained how he felt that his main achievement in the EEC was to create a new Europe- wide law to outlaw discrimination against disabled passengers when travelling by air.
