At least our local representative has some sense of responsibility. Hall Introduces Bill to Withhold President, Congress Pay During Government Shutdown October 2, 2013 WASHINGTON, DC . . . Today Rep. Ralph Hall (TX-04) introduced H.R. 3234, The Pay Accountability Act. This bill prohibits the President, Vice President, and Members of Congress from being paid during any lapse in appropriations or federal government shutdowns. Salaries for the President, Vice President, and Members of Congress also would be withheld if the federal government is unable to make payments or meet obligations because the public debt limit is reached. “In fairness to the American people who are affected by the government shutdown, including furloughed federal employees, I introduced The Pay Accountability Act,” said Hall. “It is my hope that this bill, in addition to promoting fairness, would put pressure on the President and Members of Congress to reach a responsible budget solution on behalf of the American people.” Specifically, The Pay Accountability Act would direct the President’s and Members’ of Congress pay into an escrow account where it will be held until the completion of the 113th Congress. The funds would then be turned over to the Secretary of the Treasury and used to reduce the national deficit. Hall continued, “I think it’s important to remember that we all want what’s best for the American people, but our philosophies on how to achieve that are very different. I believe, along with a majority of the people in the 4th District, that conservative values like a responsible, balanced budget and a limited federal government will promote the greatest opportunity for all Americans to prosper. “While the House continues to work toward a budget solution, I urge constituents to call my offices if they need any assistance, and let me know how I can best represent their views in Washington. I will be working in D.C. on their behalf until a solution is reached to reopen the government. “I would also like to encourage my constituents and the American people. Since 1976, there have been 18 shutdowns, and all of these were ultimately resolved and often with positive outcomes, such as a balanced budget.” ralphhall.house.gov/press-releases/hall-introduces-bill-to-withhold-president-congress-pay-during-government-shutdown/
