At my workplace we can go outside for breaks and sit on a bench on top of a stone-tiled area, or walk around near bushes, grass, and so on. I notice ants once in awhile in these areas (including ant hills). Some of them are extremely tiny--noticeable, yes, but a small fraction of an inch. And a few times I have been tempted to feed them. Im not destructive--it would be easy for me to step on a whole bunch of them but thats not me. No, I might get something like microwave popcorn or crackers (there are Keebler crackers much like animal crackers that are all shaped like Ernie the elf and have a slight lemony taste). A few days ago I had dropped one popped kernel of microwave popcorn and noticed after a few minutes that some ants went up to it. They skittered all around, some climbing on it, others going around in circles and perhaps sending signals to other ants that this food is around. Many ants going up to this popped kernel to perhaps chew part of it or maybe try to move it. They can lift many times their own weight. Several of them get below it and you can see it start to move as if they want to take it back to their ant hill, though the ant hill is actually UP from where I was sitting--theyd have to climb up about 3 feet to get it up to a grassed-in area of bushes. Well, whatever, but my tiny morsel was huge to them and I got a good feeling knowing I was feeding them. Same with the Keebler crackers...dropped a few bits of them (on purpose) and saw they were enjoying them. Yes my gigantic sneakers were nearby and I could only imagine how huge they would seem to these insects. I could stand up (again, taking care not to step on them) and imagine what a skyscraper Id seem like--no beyond that...a huge mountain tens of thousands of feet tall. One movie--was it the Ant Bully, or Antz or something--showed a huge sneaker rising above them like a mega space ship. Thats how huge my sneakers, if lifted up a couple inches up, would seem... media-cache-ec0.pinimg/originals/d3/0f/2a/d30f2a290b54e28a3d1369caf3b24141.jpg Again I felt good knowing I was feeding them and they werent really afraid of me somehow. I didnt want to think of myself as a God necessarily, to them, but it just felt good to see how a tiny bit of my food meant so much to many of them. And again ants range in size so much--there are some slightly less than an inch long but these were really, really tiny, some of them barely specks. I imagined the world from their perspective. -- So dont tread on an ant hes done nothing to you There may come a DAY hell be treadin on you Dont tread on an ant youll end up black and blue Cut off his head, legs coming looking for you... That musics lost its taste so try an another flavour Ant music... --Ant Music by Adam and the Ants, 1980s
